Why Does My Pito Report Have Uncategorized Data?

When editing a Pito Report, you may see a warning that "Your report contains uncategorized data," or you may see a row or column that is labeled 'Undefined'. This means that data cannot be displayed in the rows or columns that you have selected. There are a number of reasons you might see this error.

To diagnose your particular issue, click on the first description that applies (note: there may be multiple issues to troubleshoot):

'Undefined' Contains Global Targets

Cause:

DevResults doesn't currently allow you to disaggregate Global Targets (formerly Program Targets) within an Indicator; they apply site-wide. If you've included Global Targets in your report and set either rows or columns to display Geographies, Locations, Activities, or Disaggregations, all Global Target numbers will appear as 'Undefined'. In the screenshot above, the Global Targets are displaying as 'Undefined' because we're using a Geography (the country of Guinea) for the rows.

Solutions:

  • Remove Global Targets from your report.
  • Adjust your rows/columns to something that can have Global Targets directly assigned to it (Indicator, Reporting Period, etc.).

'Undefined' Contains Activity Targets

Cause:

DevResults doesn't currently allow you to disaggregate Activity Targets within an Indicator. If you've included Activity Targets in your report and set either rows or columns to display Geographies, Locations, or Disaggregations, all Activity Target numbers will appear as 'Undefined'. (Note: unlike Global Targets, Activity Targets will display correctly if you set either rows or columns to display Activities.) In the screenshot above, the Activity Targets are displaying as 'Undefined' because we're using a Geography (the country of Guinea) for the rows.

Solutions:

  • Remove Activity Targets from your report.
  • Adjust your rows/columns to something that can have Activity Targets directly assigned to it (Activity, Indicator, Reporting Period, etc.).

'Undefined' Appears When Displaying Activities

Cause:

Your report contains an Indicator that is not set up to report separately per Activity. In the screenshot above, Indicator 2.1.2-b is reported separately by each Activity, but Indicator RT-06 is not. The system can't assign it to an Activity, so it displays the data as 'Undefined'.

Solutions:

  • Remove any Indicators not set up to report separately per Activity.
  • Apply a filter (click where it says "any activity") by selecting only the Activities that are relevant to your report. The 'Undefined' values will disappear.

'Undefined' Appears When Displaying Organizations

Cause:

Uncategorized Organization data can occur two ways:

  1. Because the Organization can only be linked to Indicators through Activities, data for Indicators that are not set up to report separately per Activity will appear as 'Undefined'.
  2. Activities contributing to these Indicators may not have Organizations assigned, in which case the data will show up as 'Undefined'.

This applies to both Awarding Organization and Partner Organization.

Solutions:

  • Try displaying Activities instead of Organizations. If you still see 'Undefined', then you are displaying Indicators that are not set up to report separately per Activity. Either remove these indicators or use filters to select only the Activities or Organizations that are relevant to your report. The 'Undefined' values will disappear.
  • If displaying Activities instead of Organizations did not remove the 'Undefined' category, you will need to assign the missing Organizations to their appropriate Activities. You can check the Activities index (click on Activities in gray navigation bar) and use the settings menu (click on the gear icon in the upper right) to turn on the Partner and Awarding Organization columns; this will reveal which Activities have missing Organizations.

'Undefined' Appears When Displaying Geographies (i.e. Regions, Districts, Locations)

Cause:

Actuals displayed by Geography will appear as 'Undefined' when you've selected a Geography that is more granular than the geographic reporting level of one or more of your selected indicators. In the screenshot above, the rows are displaying data by Region, but Indicator 1.3-c is reported at the Country level. Therefore, the country-level data cannot be parsed at the region-level, so it appears as 'Undefined'.

Solutions:

  • Remove the indicators reporting at a less-granular Geographic Level.
  • Adjust the Geography used in the report to at least the same level as the least-granular Indicator.

'Undefined' Appears When Displaying Disaggregations

Cause:

Displaying data for two or more Indicators with different Disaggregations will result in 'Undefined' data. In the screenshot above, Indicator 1.3-c is Disaggregated by the categories 'Urban' and 'Rural', but Indicator 2.1.2-b has no Disaggregations. Therefore, the system cannot parse these values into 'Urban' and 'Rural' categories, so it displays them instead in a single 'Undefined' column.

Solutions:

  • Remove any indicators that don't have disaggregations from your selected list.
  • Don't display disaggregations if two or more Indicators in the report do not match (uncheck any boxes next to Disaggregations in the Indicator tree to the left).
